Atrazine
Atrazine is a selective herbicide of the triazine class. It is used to prevent broadleaf and grassy weeds in corn, sorghum, sugarcane, pineapple, Christmas trees, and other crops, and also in conifer reforestation plantings. Additionally, it can act as a nonselective weed killer on non-cropped industrial lands and on fallow lands.
Over 64 million acres of cropland were treated with atrazine in the U.S. in 1990. This product is available as dry flowable, emulsion, liquid, water dispersible granule, and wettable powder formulations.
Uses
Atrazine is used to kill pre and post-emergence broadleaf weeds and grassy weeds in major crops. The compound is both effective and inexpensive, thus being well-suited to production systems with very narrow profit margins, as is often the case with maize. This is the most widely used herbicide in conservation tillage systems, which are designed to prevent soil erosion.
Mode of Action
Atrazine is prepared from cyanuric chloride, which is treated sequentially with diethylamine and isopropyl amine. In common with other triazine herbicides, it functions by binding to the plastoquinone-binding protein in photosystem II. Then, plant will die caused by starvation and oxidative damage. Oxidative damage is accelerated at high light intensity.
