Chip cards, or smart cards are pocket-sized cards with a chip embedded in their surfaces. Some cards, called contactless smart cards, use radio frequency (RF) technology to transmit information. Other cards are known as contact smart cards, and are recognizable by the exposed metallic chip on the surface that is similar to the SIM card in your phone.

Despite the fact that the contact-less card uses RF technology to transact information, the RF-enabled contactless card actually contains EEPROM which allows data rewrite, versus the simple ROM (read only memory) installed in the RFID card, yet many manufacturers use these two terms interchangeably.

Smart cards are being utilized more and more frequently as travel cards, ID cards, credit cards, access control cards, gift cards, hotel key cards, membership cards, etc. The technology in these cards makes them desirable for their added security and functionality.
